California lawmakers advanced several bills Tuesday that would help the state implement national health care reform, over the objection of Republicans.
The state Senate narrowly approved two bills to set up an insurance exchange that would allow people to shop for health insurance. The exchange would let people compare insurance plans and buy coverage through a consumer-friendly website.

| Lawmakers pass measure to limit rate hikes |

The measure, AB 2042, was part of a flood of bills approved as the Legislature heads into its last week of the current session. Other measures would exempt some state agencies from furloughs, require the state to accept its own IOUs from businesses, urge the Census Bureau to ask people whether they're gay, and restrict the use of taxpayer funds to film commercials outside of California. ...more
